In 1996, a group of physicians committed to creating healthier communities in southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas formed Mercy Physician Group, a division of Mercy Health System of Kansas, Inc.
Mercy Physician Group services span a nine county region in southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri with physician offices in Fort Scott and Independence. Medical services are also provided through four rural clinics located in Pleasanton, Arma, and Cherryvale, Kansas.
 Primary care is the focus of the group which sees a wide range of patients including men and women, children, and older adults.
