Nurse Practitioners Lead Urgent Care at Mercy

John Woodrich, president and CEO of Mercy Health System of Kansas, welcomes advanced registered nurse practitioners Donna Dewey and Lynieta Leisure as the providers for the new Urgent Care at Mercy.

The center, which opened Sept. 4, sees on the average of 30 patients daily for minor illnesses and injuries ranging from minor respiratory infections, sprains and strains, minor lacerations, insect bits and rashes, and suture removal. The center also offers physician back up with minor x-ray and lab services available.

“We are pleased to provide this service to our community knowing that it will be staffed by highly-trained and experienced nurse practitioners who have lived in this community for many years,” said Woodrich. “Donna and Lynieta treat the whole individual with exceptional care and compassion.”

“This promises to be a fun evening of learning and laughing,” said Leah Lewis, Mercy Health Center director of education. “After all, aren’t we all a little curious about who will get the answers right or wrong?”

Dewey, who has 28 years experience as a nurse and 11 years experience as a nurse practitioner, was previously a provider at the Medical Plaza of Arma, in Arma, KS, a rural clinic operated by Mercy. She has worked in various capacities at Mercy since 1989 including nurse manager, nurse supervisor, and infection control nurse. In 1996, she accepted the position at the rural clinic in Arma.

Dewey received a Baccalaureate in Nursing from Missouri Southern State University and subsequently a Masters of Science in Nursing – Family Nurses Practitioner from the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Since, 2003, Leisure has worked as a nurse practitioner for the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka, KS, providing primary care to veterans through four outreach clinic sites located in Southeast Kansas. Beginning in 2001, she also worked part time as a nurse practitioner in a private family practice environment.

Leisure began her career at Mercy in 2000 through 2003 as a nurse practitioner in the Emergency Department.

Leisure received both her Baccalaureate in Nursing and Masters of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.

Both Leisure and Dewy are licensed by the State of Kansas as registered nurses and nurse practitioners.

The urgent care center is open Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Saturday and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Located adjacent to the Emergency Department, no appointments are necessary and walk-ins are welcome.
