Mardie
Bell, 39, is the OB Coordinator for Mercy Hospital and is responsible for
departmental staffing and the operations of the Maternal & Infant Clinic and
MercyKids Immunization Clinic. She began her career at Mercy in 1991.
While Mardie serves in
a supervisory capacity, as an OB nurse, her job also includes providing care
for mothers at all stages of pregnancy, labor and delivery and caring for
newborns upon arrival.
“I always wanted to be
an OB nurse. From the moment I started nursing school, I knew I wanted to go
into OB,” Mardie explains.
“I enjoy working for
Mercy. I like the people I work with - I have made a lot of friends here. It
is a community hospital …and a really friendly environment.”
A Registered
Nurse in the Mercy Family Birthplace coordinates obstetrical patent care by:
identifying specific patient care needs; prescribing interventions to meet
the patient’s expected outcomes; and communicating and working effectively
with physicians and team members. Requirements include documented education
and experience in caring for patients who are in the prenatal, antepartum or
postpartum stages of pregnancy; graduation from an accredited school of
nursing; and current Kansas licensure. Med/surg and OB experience is
preferred, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are
necessary. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is required
within one year of employment and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is
required within three months of employment. Both courses are offered at
